History of the DFW Chapter of ASPE |
|
Building on a 30-year tradition of leadership, education and service, the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of ASPE is an integral part of the Plumbing industry in Texas and the nation as a whole.
Up until 1968, Dallas/Fort Worth members of ASPE (American Society of Plumbing Engineers) had been assigned to the Member-At-Large category. In 1970, these members decided it was time to create a Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of ASPE. On June 27, 1972, Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter became the second chapter in Texas, and the 12th in Society.
Local decisions and activities kept the Chapter busy during this eventful year. Under then Charter President Richard Ellis, the chapter christened the monthly newsletter, “ASPE NEWS”, started teaching Plumbing Design at El Centro College, Dallas County Community College, Dallas, and at Northeast Campus Tarrant County Junior College, Fort Worth, and attended the Society Biennial meeting in Atlanta, GA. Other Chapter officers included Eugene Dickens, Vice President Technical, Mickey Hearne, Vice President Legislative, Paul Chaney, P.E., Vice President Membership, A. Roy Whitelock, III, Treasurer, Bill Helena, P.E., Administrative Secretary, and Lewis Crow, Corresponding Secretary.
The 70's and 80's and 90's brought the Chapter significant growth in the areas of membership, scope, reputation and participation in Region 5 and society. The 24 past Presidents have garnered awards of excellence, membership awards, and education awards as evidenced by the awards displayed on the chapter banners at each Chapter meeting.
In September 1975, the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter took the “bull by the horns” and decided to pull the Plumbing Design Course away from the Junior Collage District and start teaching it at TD Industries Training Center in Dallas. The course followed the same class schedule of a one semester course, sixteen weeks, two hours per week for thirty-two hours, as was at the Junior College. Then in 1997, Bud Miller, was able to cut the sixteen week course down to three eight hour sessions on consecutive days. In 1998, Richard Ellis and Bud Miller, decided to offer the Basic Plumbing Design I Course of twenty-four hours on three consecutive Saturday’s. The course is now presented in this format.
In October 1981 the Chapter hosted its 1st Region 5 Seminar at the Dallas Anatole Hotel.
Chapter Year 1990 - 1991, under the able leadership of President Jim Vertz, the Chapter began holding lunch time technical meetings in both Dallas and Fort Worth on the 4th Tuesday and Wednesday.
In 1997, the Chapter began forming a satellite chapter in Lubbock.
In April 2002, the Chapter received two awards, one for chapter growth of 10% or more (11.65%) for region 5 and one for overall chapter growth from all regions. In June 2002 the Chapter also received a commemorative patch for their banner celebrating their 30 year Anniversary.
In June 2004, John Santi, was appointed Chair of the Chapter Education Committee, replacing longtime instructor and former Chair Richard Ellis. Bud Miller to remain as a member of the Chapter Education Committee.
On September 16, 2004, President Kelvin Kennedy recognized Tulsa, OK as the newest Satellite of the DFW Chapter. He also went to Oklahoma City, OK for an evening organizational meeting to encourage the members in OKC to petition as a Satellite Chapter of DFW.
